Controversial water bill awaits Governor's signature
Peripheral canal plan which pits agribusiness interests against environmental concerns.
In the early morning hours on Wednesday, legislators in Sacramento voted on a complicated and extensive package of bills concerning California’s water resources. The bills now go to Gov. Schwarzenegger for his signature.
The package calls for creating a seven-member Delta Oversight Council that would adopt a long-range management plan for the delta by 2012, and would be authorized to approve the construction of a peripheral canal to carry water to Central and Southern California, although legislators did not include concrete plans for the canal. more...
State budget on May election ballot
This week, those who served as election clerks and inspectors for the November election received letters from the Contra Costa County Elections Division requesting their services once again in May.

Windfall for DUI probation office
As the State legislature struggles to solve a $42 billion deficit, the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) recently awarded the Contra Costa County Probation Department a grant of $620,115 to pay for the supervision of felony DUI offenders on probation.
This money will be used to pay the salaries for two probation officers for two years, and other administration costs, according to Probation Supervisor Laurie Barnes. more...

DMV releases new laws for the new year.
With 2009 right around the corner, the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) reminds motorists of several new laws that will ring in the New Year.
Among the new laws is AB 2241, which limits the issuance of temporary operating permits to those individuals whose vehicles have yet to pass a smog check. The law calls for a $50 fee for one 60-day temporary operating permit only if the vehicle has been tested at a smog station and failed.more...
