Martinez lost a true native son recently, a member of a family settled here for five generations.

Louis “Louie” Menesini was born at 1225 Castro Street in 1918 and remained rooted here for the ensuing 91 years, leaving only during WWII to join the U.S. Army in the European theater and fight in the Battle of the Bulge.more...

The 72-year-old Alhambra Valley resident recently won the international title in his category - seniors aged 70 and above - at the 2009 World Championship of Cowboy Fast Draw.

During the competition, held in Fallon, NV, Grilli lined up at a shooting range with his fellow contenders to see who could unholster a single-action 45-caliber revolver and fire off a wax bullet in the shortest timeframe. more...

Couple returns with thoughts on Haiti

The day after a 7.0 earthquake hit Port au Prince, Martinez couple Anna and Steve Land boarded a plane with a 37-member medical team headed to Haiti. As the plane neared landing, Anna leaned towards the small thick windows but it was dark and most damage faded into the night. Upon arrival to the U.S. Embassy, the team waited for their mission, eventually heading to a golf club, where they began setting up an outdoor treatment center.more...

‘Hearts’ offers boost of warmth to foster care

Local woman spearheads project to help foster kids.

632 children entered the foster care system in Contra Costa County during the 2008 calendar year, according to data provided by U.C. Berkeley’s Center for Social Services Research. In each instance, after allegations of child abuse are substantiated and the child is removed from the home, he or she is brought to a receiving center in Concord for processing.

In the majority of cases, the child arrives at the center, run by a local non-profit, with no personal belongings and often in an anguished state.more...

Two-way football star earned many honors; three-year starter.

New San Jose State football coach Mike MacIntyre continued to keep a feverish pace on the recruiting trail with National Signing Day just a few days away. The latest addition to the Spartans stable was big Travis Raciti from College Park High School. Raciti paid a visit to the campus and met with MacIntyre to seal the deal last Sunday.

At CP, Raciti played both tight-end and defensive tackle. He even lined-up as a linebacker in some defensive schemes. No matter where this solid young man played, he was a force to reckon-with for the opposition. more...

Physicians heading to Haiti

ER and Critical Care physicians at CCRMC, are set to leave for Haiti on Monday to pitch in with the recovery effort after an earthquake struck the impoverished nation on Jan. 12.

Citing superlative training and a long tradition of disaster relief support, an emergency room doctor at Martinez’s Contra Costa Regional Medical Center (CCRMC) told the Gazette on Friday afternoon the reasons why she and three of her ER colleagues are leaving for Haiti on Monday.

CCRMC Doctors Brenda Reilly, Bill Peterson, Pramita Kuruvilla and Neil Jayasekera are scheduled to arrive in Haiti on Wednesday to wield their medical training on a population overwhelmed by disaster following the 7.0 earthquake on Jan. 12. more...

Police asking for public assistance in locating Darlene Dunn, 58.

Police in the Northern California city of Redding issued a “Missing At Risk Adult” report this week on a  former Martinez native who has possibly returned to the area.

Local teen murdered

Eric Bean was beaten, strangled, according to autopsy report.

Eighteen-year-old Eric Bean of Martinez was found dead Monday on McEwan Road, approximately one mile north of Highway 4. A Martinez resident notified the Sheriff’s Office at 10:14 a.m. Bean was pronounced dead on the scene, and the Crime Lab and Homicide Detectives were dispatched to the location.

According to Jimmy Lee, the Director of Public Affairs for the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office, the case is being considered a homicide. Lee estimates that the body may have been brought to the location post-mortem.more...

Hit-and-run suspect to be arraigned next week

The man who allegedly killed bicyclist Mark Pendleton last November is charged with vehicular manslaughter.

On Monday, the man police say killed bicyclist Mark Pendleton in Nov. 2008 will be arraigned in a Walnut Creek courthouse.

Pendleton, 49, an ardent bicyclist and member of the Wells Fargo Racing Team, was returning to his Alhambra Way home from a routine training ride to Port Costa when a motorist drifted across the center line and struck Pendleton, killing him almost instantly before driving away. The hit-and-run accident occurred on the west shoulder of McEwen Road, about half a mile north of Route 4.more...

Coach Tim Bruder remembered for impact on students’ lives.

A week after the death of Alhambra High School coach and teacher Tim Bruder, a Facebook page dedicated to his memory has attracted nearly 800 members and almost as many testimonials to his prodigious popularity with students and colleagues.

Entry after entry chronicles the positive, lasting impact Bruder had on the legions of teenagers who crossed the threshold of his auto shop classroom or joined the Bulldog track or cross country running teams over the past 24 years.

A memorial is scheduled for Dec. 19 at 4 p.m. in the AHS gymnasium.more...
