Rough, rugged and bloody good

MOVE REVIEW

With a slew of summer action movies that have been a bit lackluster on the whole, audiences haven’t had a lot of substance with their action this summer. Be prepared for something a bit different with Neil Marshall’s newest outing, Centurion.more...

Scott Pilgrim equals awesome

MOVIE REVIEW

Geeks, hipsters and counter culture youths rejoice, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World has hit theaters. Though its debut at the box office was disappointing it doesn’t change the fact that it’s one of the most unique film experiences you’ll have. In this comic book, retro gaming bonanza there is so much over the top action and unique style that the film almost can’t contain it. Almost.more...

Inception: candy for your eyes and mind

MOVIE REVIEW

In a lack luster summer full of reboots and sequels there was one big hope for something original and that was Christopher Nolan’s Inception. It looked like it had the makings of a true Sci-Fi summer thrill ride and every teaser got better and better.  The question everyone eagerly awaited the answer to was whether Inception would live up to the hype or become a failed Hollywood attempt at originality.more...

Predators: Back to basics, bloody good

After a disappointing sequel and the silly slop of two AVP movies, everyone’s favorite big, bad galactic hunters are back in Predators. Since the classic original film from the 80s, old pincer face hasn’t really had a full return to glory. Director Nimrod Antal gives it one heck of a shot and for the most part delivers in a nitty gritty return to form in a spirited sequel to the original.more...

Please let this be the Last Airbender

MOVIE REVIEW

When I heard that Hollywood would be adapting Avatar: the Last Airbender I was worried. The animated series isn’t particularly dear to me but I did enjoy what I watched of it and found it to be pretty darn good for a children’s cartoon.  When I heard M. Night Shyamalan would be directing it just made things worse for me. Shyamalan has had a track record of disappointing films as of late. With the exception of Unbreakable his films have been going down hill since The Sixth Sense and sadly The Last Airbender is no exception. more...

More fluff, not enough stuff

MOVIE REVIEW

As we press into the heart of the summer movie season the big, bad blockbusters are looming. If you’re half dreading half looking forward to them like myself then you’re probably looking for something light and enjoyable, some summer fluff before our big budget boys come out to play.  more...

The toys are back in town

MOVE REVIEW

I have to admit that in an industry crowded with shoddy remakes and sequels Pixar’s Toy Story 3 had me a little worried. It’s not that I didn’t have faith in the studio, which always produces good work. Even at their worst. It was a great fear of sequel syndrome. The thought of the adventures of Woody, Buzz and the gang getting stale, or there not being any more strong emotional ground to tread on put a big helping of doubt on my excitement.more...

Karate Kid: a kick for the whole family

MOVIE REVIEW

First things first, the title of this film is ridiculously stupid. Even though it shares the name of the original it has nothing to do with karate or Japan. It’s in fact the exact opposite and is entirely set in China and not one person in the film does karate. I understand they slapped the name on to draw a large audience in but it just struck me as a bit tacky and culturally insensitive. more...

Get Him to the Greek Goes to Eleven

MOVIE REVIEW

There have been a lot of films made about rock stars and their insane and self-destructive lives over the years. Many are serious pieces that show us the ugly face of fame but few have attempted to make a decent comedy on the subject. Those of you who didn’t get enough rock star wildness and dysfunction from Spinal Tap throw up your horns, Get Him to the Greek is a laugh out loud, wild ride. With great skill and fun it walks a tricky line between cultural relevance and substance filled shenanigans.more...

Prince of Persia: Passing the sands of time

MOVIE REVIEW

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time brings yet another Hollywood video game adaptation to the big screen. I know that brings a bad taste to the collective moviegoer’s mouth and it should. Film adaptations of video games always fall to the very bottom of quality no matter how big the budget or how interesting the premise.more...

Shrek ends on a good, but tired note

MOVIE REVIEW

Just in case you weren’t tired of the land of Far Far Away DreamWorks animation has brought us yet another Shrek tale.  You’d figure after the lackluster third film they’d get the hint that the silly adventures of Shrek and his pals has ran its course but this is Hollywood and any dime that can get squeezed out of a series or franchise should be used until completely dry. It’s strange that DreamWorks would resort to another sequel when they’ve hit a solid stride with their new films, but sequels, remakes and adaptations are about the only thing made any more.  more...

Character and charisma polish a rusty story

MOVIE REVIEW

Well folks, the summer movie season is upon us and it kicks off with John Favreau’s follow up to his first surprise marvel comic hit Iron Man. This addition in the saga of inventor playboy turned superhero, Tony Stark sees the return of many of the original characters and most of the cast.  Robert Downey Jr. of course reprises his role with great narcissistic relish and charisma.more...

Nothing new about Nightmare

MOVIE REVIEW

In the slew of remakes and adaptations from Hollywood we get another horror revamp with Platinum Dunes’ remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street. Like most horror classic revamps this remake is completely pointless, there’s no recapturing the iconic images and character of Freddy Kruger and let’s be honest there’s no replacing Robert Englund.  more...

Comedy makes Losers a winner

MOVIE REVIEW

Summer is quickly approaching, and that can only mean one thing, a slew of by the book action movies and popcorn blockbusters are coming to test your wallet soon.  Well the fun, loud party starts early this year with yet another comic book adaptation, The Losers.  The laugh heavy action movie boasts a cast of interesting, wise cracking mercenaries trying to exact revenge on a certain Max for framing them for the murder of twenty children during a secret operation in South America.  Sounds pretty run of the mill and in many ways it is, but what The Losers has goimore...

Make a date for fun with Date Night

FILM REVIEW

If you’ve ever felt that your relationship was static, that it had lost its spark and you and your partner have simply become “really good roommates” you should get out and catch this fun romantic comedy about mom/dad, wife/husband team the Fosters.  Between work, kids and the rest of life Phil (Steve Carell) and Claire (Tina Fey) Foster are stuck in the rut of just going through the parent and couple motions.  They linger through rough days at work, horrid book club meetings and taking care of the kids.  Even when they do get out on a date with each other all they seem to tamore...

Opinions will Clash

MOVIE REVIEW

Well the summer blockbuster season is nearly upon us and things have kicked off with Louis Leterrier’s remake of the 1981 campy action adventure, Clash of the Titans.  The new reincarnation sports bigger better special effects and plenty of mythological beasties to slay but is it any good? Has Louis Leterrier’s effort fallen into the dreaded pit of overdone rehashes? Well yes and no.  While the new Clash of the Titans suffers from a plot that never gives you time to take anything in, and a horrendously bad 3D scan slapped on it, the film is still a lot of fun.more...

Wolfman is its own silver bullet

MOVIE REVIEW

There is a trend in Hollywood as of late, and that is remaking just about every film ever made. Universal’s remake of their classic, “The Wolfman,” is no exception. It also unfortunately falls victim to the sub par remake norm. Pretty sub par at that. That isn’t necessarily the fault of the filmmakers.  The film’s production has been plagued with creative differences between the filmmakers and the studio since its conception.more...
