‘Hearts’ offers boost of warmth to foster care

Local woman spearheads project to help foster kids.

632 children entered the foster care system in Contra Costa County during the 2008 calendar year, according to data provided by U.C. Berkeley’s Center for Social Services Research. In each instance, after allegations of child abuse are substantiated and the child is removed from the home, he or she is brought to a receiving center in Concord for processing.

In the majority of cases, the child arrives at the center, run by a local non-profit, with no personal belongings and often in an anguished state.more...

Young artist advances to state competition

A season-appropriate artwork by John Swett Elementary student Tanner Matthews was selected on Saturday to advance to a statewide competition at the 32nd District Showcase, hosted by the Martinez PTA Council and held at the Performing Arts Center at Alhambra High School. Matthews’ winning entry won out over submissions to the Reflections Art Program Contest from all the Northern California PTA Councils.more...

Junior High student arrested for selling prescription drugs on campus

The eighth grader apparently stole the narcotics from a relative; one student became ill after ingesting pills.

A Martinez Junior High School student was arrested this week for selling prescription narcotic drugs to fellow classmates, according to Commander Gary Peterson of the Martinez Police Dept.

School officials were alerted to the drug sales after another student came to the school’s health office last Friday with complaints of feeling ill after buying and ingesting the prescription drugs on campus.more...

Local teen murdered

Eric Bean was beaten, strangled, according to autopsy report.

Eighteen-year-old Eric Bean of Martinez was found dead Monday on McEwan Road, approximately one mile north of Highway 4. A Martinez resident notified the Sheriff’s Office at 10:14 a.m. Bean was pronounced dead on the scene, and the Crime Lab and Homicide Detectives were dispatched to the location.

According to Jimmy Lee, the Director of Public Affairs for the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office, the case is being considered a homicide. Lee estimates that the body may have been brought to the location post-mortem.more...

Firefighters deliver gifts from local elfs

Firefighters from the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District Station 12 made a special detour on Friday to a Christmas party at the Foxworthy home in Martinez. There mini-hostesses Payton Foxworthy and Annie Galletti and their fellow Morello Park Elementary second grade classmates handed over gifts they had collected for the Toys for Tots program. Instead of the usual annual gift exchange between students, the girls decided to donate their presents to kids less fortunate than themselves, said Payton’s mom Michelle Sparacino Foxworthy.more...

West Side Gang does it again

Local kids combine efforts to collect for Toys for Tots.

The founders call it the West Side Toy Drive, referring to the Martinez neighborhood surrounding Green Street and Arlington Way where the two 12-year-olds live.

Last year, best friends and Martinez Junior High students Hannah Hatch and Maria Filice brainstormed a campaign to gather donations for the Marines’ Toys for Tots program, after a serious talk with grandmother Mary Hatch about people who go without during the holidays  . more...

Suspicious man seen around schools

The Interim Superintendent of the Mt. Diable Unified School District, which includes  Hidden Valley Elementary School in Martinez, issued a warning to parents and students on Thursday morning about two disturbing incidents which occurred over the past week in Pleasant Hill. On Thursday afternoon, police received a third report of a similar incident in Concord.  All three police reports involve a description of what appears to be the same man.more...

Local student wins poetry contest

Briones School sophomore Torin Keyes is a finalist in the 2009 River of Words Contest, an annual international contest for poetry and art on the topic of watersheds. His poem was selected for the Creek Seeker Prize, presented by the San Francisco Estuary Project.

Co-sponsored by the Library of Congress Center for the Book, entries are judged by former U.S. Poet Laureate Robert Hass, a founder of the River of Words Association. more...

Local girl in coma following fall from horse

The Martinez Horseman Association will hold a benefit for Allison Angove’s family on May 16 at the waterfront park.

16-year-old Allison Angove, a Junior at Alhambra High School, suffered severe head trauma during an equestrian competition on April 10 when her horse fell. An experienced equestrian, Allison has been competing for several years. It’s not clear what caused the fall. The extent of the damage is still unknown, as she is still in a coma. She was recently moved from Fresno to Kaiser Oakland. Her family is keeping an online journal on the Caring Bridge site, www.caringbridge.org/visit/allisonangove.more...

Wildcats Under 10 Boy’s Select team takes 2nd-place at PHMSA Soccerfest

PHMSA Soccerfest took place the weekend of April 4-5. The Under 10 Boy’s Select team “Wildcats” played great matches, winning games over the Davis Scorpions and Palo Alto Premier on Saturday and had enough points to advance to the semi-finals Sunday where they faced a tough Antelope Valley team.

The Wildcats came out on top 3-2 in a hard fought battle, advancing to the championship game. There they met MDSA Strikers, from Concord who proved better that game, winning 4-1. Still, a great second-place finish in the tournament for the PHMSA Wildcats.more...

4-H program safe... for now

In response to vocal lobbying by Contra Costa County 4-H members and their parents, the County Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday to provide “full funding” of the youth program, at least until the end of the fiscal year – June 30.

After that, the 4-H program, supported jointly by the County and the University of California Cooperative Extension (UCCE), must seek “other funding mechanisms” to continue, according to 4-H officials.more...
