Tea Party sympathy alive locally
In Martinez, Democrats ostensibly outnumber Republicans nearly two to one. As of this month, of the total 21,488 registered voters in the City, 10,703 identify themselves as Democrat and 5,412 as Republican, according to the Contra Costa Elections Division, although 4,198 Martinez voters checked the box reading, “I do not want to register with a political party,” on their form.

And then there were ten
A daily call to the Contra Costa Elections Division for an update on possible Council candidates is not nearly enough as the 5 p.m. Friday filing deadline nears; an hourly check-in might be in order.
When the Elections office closed on Wednesday, three more names were added to the list of those who have pulled papers in preparation of declaring their Martinez mayoral or Council candidacy.
Former Congressional candidate, John Fitzgerald, said yesterday that he decided to run for mayor on Monday night.more...

Active resident pulls papers for Council seat
Another candidate has tossed her hat in the City Council election ring; Gay Gerlack pulled the necessary papers yesterday and declared her campaign was officially underway.
“It was not an easy decision, because of all the things I’ve involved with,” Gerlack explained, but felt as an “independent-minded candidate who believes Martinez can be a thriving city that supports local businesses, the arts, environment and the unique history of downtown,” it was time for her to run.more...

Rather than attack his lengthy tenure, many voters regard his experience as an asset to the organization.more...

Candidates for D.A. say it’s time to clean up office
All three of the candidates for Contra Costa District Attorney agree on one thing: the D.A.’s office is rife with dysfunction after years of mismanagement and each has vowed that should they win the election, it will no longer be ‘business as usual’ for the 170 staff members that prosecute criminal cases from the County’s 17 police departments and the Office of the Sheriff.

Political advertising, vandalism on the campaign trail
As Tuesday’s primary election nears, candidates have earnestly stepped up their advertising in an effort to win over voters, as evidenced by the proliferation of television and radio election commercials in the past week.
County Assessor incumbent Gus Kramer was one of the first candidates to authorize friends and family, and a campaign consultant company, to place campaign signs at strategic locations around Martinez, once the 90-day rule kicked into effect.more...
Voters to decide five propositions
Voters in the June 8 primary election will decide five propositions on such wide-ranging issues as car insurance, energy, campaign funding, seismic retrofits and whether primary elections should ignore party lines.
Proposition 13 addresses certain seismic retrofits. Added by the Legislature, it would assure that earthquake safety improvements made to un-reinforced masonry buildings, such as those made of brick, wouldn’t trigger a reassessment of the property or higher property taxes until the building is sold.more...

“George Miller has occupied his Congressional seat since 1974 and although he is an affable person and I voted for him for years, I believe he is not representing the best interests of his constituency or the country in regards to some very important issues,” said John Fitzgerald, one of Miller’s Democratic opponents for the U.S. House of Representatives District 7 primary election on June 8.more...
