Lungren pushes Megan’s Law beyond borders
In the future, Contra Costa County sex offenders can expect more than just unannounced law enforcement sweeps, as they were treated to a couple of weeks ago. Soon, they may have to notify officials three weeks in advance of their travel plans.
Rep. Dan Lungren (R-CA), who represents the 3rd District, has once again taken on sex offenders. Lungren was instrumental as Attorney General in adopting Megan’s Law in California, which requires sex offenders to register in a public database. Now he wants to take it international.more...

Countywide sting targets sex offenders
Two cans of beer in the fridge. That was enough for members of the Region 2 Sexual Assault Felony Enforcement Team (SAFE) to arrest a 29-year-old registered sexual offender (RSO) living in a Martinez apartment for violating a parole “no alcohol” clause during a massive, multi-law enforcement agency operation this week.more...
Alamo arrests linked to local identity theft victims
This week in Alamo, a multi-agency team of law enforcement officers arrested four adults on charges of identity theft, possession of a controlled substance and outstanding warrants.
According to Martinez Police (MPD) Detective Sergeant Jon Sylvia, after a two-month investigation into county-wide identity theft cases, agents from the MPD Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office and the Contra Costa County Narcotics Enforcement Team (CCCNET) narrowed their focus on Robert Brosamer, 44, and secured a search warrant for his Alamo single-family residence on Miranda Avenue. more...

Junior High student arrested for selling prescription drugs on campus
The eighth grader apparently stole the narcotics from a relative; one student became ill after ingesting pills.
A Martinez Junior High School student was arrested this week for selling prescription narcotic drugs to fellow classmates, according to Commander Gary Peterson of the Martinez Police Dept.
School officials were alerted to the drug sales after another student came to the school’s health office last Friday with complaints of feeling ill after buying and ingesting the prescription drugs on campus.more...

City to install several surveillance cameras
Dispatchers will monitor suspicious activities and quickly relay information to patrols, MPD says.
If the City Council grants final approval, soon a police dispatcher may watch you waiting at the cross walk at Alhambra and F Street, perhaps impatiently punching the button on your way to shopping at Safeway. Waiting for the train at the train station, a video camera will record your pacing and beam it to the police. If someone suddenly tries to mug you, the idea is the dispatcher will see it and send a patrol car to the rescue.more...
Memorial service scheduled for Eric Bean
An impromptu vigil was also held over the weekend for the teen, found murdered last week.
A memorial for slain Martinez teenager Eric Bean is scheduled for 2 p.m on Jan. 3 at the Connelly and Taylor Funeral Home.
Over the weekend, roughly 150 mourners gathered in Rankin Park to hold a candlelight vigil for the popular 18-year-old, whose body was found aside McEwen Road on Dec. 22 by a passing motorist.
A subsequent autopsy revealed Bean died from asphyxiation from strangulation and blunt force head trauma. Police believe Bean was killed at another location and his body was dumped on the road to Port Costa, one mile north of Hwy. 4.more...
Local teen murdered
Eric Bean was beaten, strangled, according to autopsy report.
Eighteen-year-old Eric Bean of Martinez was found dead Monday on McEwan Road, approximately one mile north of Highway 4. A Martinez resident notified the Sheriff’s Office at 10:14 a.m. Bean was pronounced dead on the scene, and the Crime Lab and Homicide Detectives were dispatched to the location.
According to Jimmy Lee, the Director of Public Affairs for the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office, the case is being considered a homicide. Lee estimates that the body may have been brought to the location post-mortem.more...

Christmas charity warehouse burglarized three times this month
Grinches stole thousands of items, including gifts, warm coats that had taken a year to accumulate.
When he created the vile and fiendish eponymous character for “How the Grinch Stole Christmas!,” published in 1957, Dr. Suess doubtlessly intended the children’s book to remain classified as fiction.
Unfortunately for the 24-year-old non-profit group Christmas for Everyone, over the past month Suess’ story line was appropriated by real-life villains who burglarized a sizable storage unit in unincorporated Martinez, stealing about half of the inventory collected by the charity, all of which was intended to be distributed to those in need on Christmas Day. more...

Man who pretended to be Marine faces Federal charges
1988 AHS graduate showed up to class reunion in full regalia, was caught by a classmate who serves in the military and forwarded a photo to the FBI.
Steven Burton, the 1988 Alhambra High School graduate who showed up at his 20-year reunion in a military dress uniform covered with a glut of top-service medals, pleaded guilty this week to one federal fraud charge.more...

Hit-and-run suspect to be arraigned next week
The man who allegedly killed bicyclist Mark Pendleton last November is charged with vehicular manslaughter.
On Monday, the man police say killed bicyclist Mark Pendleton in Nov. 2008 will be arraigned in a Walnut Creek courthouse.
Pendleton, 49, an ardent bicyclist and member of the Wells Fargo Racing Team, was returning to his Alhambra Way home from a routine training ride to Port Costa when a motorist drifted across the center line and struck Pendleton, killing him almost instantly before driving away. The hit-and-run accident occurred on the west shoulder of McEwen Road, about half a mile north of Route 4.more...

Burglary suspect shot by Sheriff deputies
50-year-old suspect is in stable condition. Two other suspects are still at large.
Two Sheriff deputies sustained minor injuries and one suspect hospitalized with multiple gun shot wounds after an early Monday morning foiled burglary and chase in an unincorporated area of Martinez on Pacheco Blvd.
At 2:23 a.m., Sonitrol Alarm Company personnel contacted the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office (CCCSO) to report seeing, via a security camera, three burglary suspects in the yard area of Tire Distribution Systems (TDS) at 4575 Pacheco Blvd, said CCCSO spokesperson Captain Daniel Terry.more...

Police probe rash of debit card frauds
Benicia, Martinez MPD investigating. Victims aren’t missing their ATM cards, but suspects are using cloned cards to withdraw funds from ATMs at 7-11 stores in different towns in the area.
Benicia police detectives said thieves had illegally obtained debit card information and have used it to steal up to $8,000 from local residents’ bank accounts. At least 15 cases have been reported, Lt. Mike Daley said Friday.
“Someone has fraudulently obtained debit card information and PIN numbers for withdrawals in Martinez, Benicia and the American Canyon area,” Daley said.
Victims of this fraud are apparently not missing their cards, raising the possibility that the perpetrators are somehow using duplicate cards.more...

Two Benicia girls arrested after video of assault on schoolmate was posted on YouTube
Two Benicia Middle School girls, 12 and 14, were arrested last Sunday and booked into Solano County Juvenile Hall after allegedly beating a 13-year-old schoolmate and posting the filmed assault on YouTube. The two have been charged with felony assault.
The video, recorded on a cell phone, has been deleted from the Web site, Lt. Mike Daley of the Benicia Police Department said.more...

Gressett indicted by Grand Jury
Former Deputy District Attorney, accused of sexually assaulting a colleague, facing felony charges.
Michael Gressett, 52, the former veteran prosecutor in the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office Sex Crimes Unit arrested in Oct. 2008 for allegedly raping a colleague five months earlier, now faces an additional felony charge after a criminal grand jury indicted him on 13 counts of rape, sodomy and sexual assault this week.
The indictment replaces the 12 counts leveled against Gressett by the California Attorney General’s Office, which had assumed prosecution of the case due to Gressett’s employment by the County D.A.more...

Residents alarmed by daring escape from County Jail
Man accused of statutory rape was caught several hours later, following a foot chase.
2000 Martinez residents received an alarming phone call on Tuesday evening after a 22-year-old man escaped from police custody, prompting a 12-hour manhunt by several local police agencies.
The Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office used the TENS (telephone emergency notification system) to call residents surrounding the Martinez Detention Facility, where Brentwood police had brought Brentwood resident Patrick Libbey following his arrest on sexual assault charges. more...

P.H. Police releases sketch of schoolyard suspect
Sept. 24 — On Tuesday, the Pleasant Hill Police Department released artist sketches of a man suspected of plotting to kidnap young students on three separate occasions early in the month.
Although the incidents occurred at Pleasant Hill Middle School and in Concord, Martinez Unified School District Rami Muth sent out an email to all District administrators yesterday, in which she included the sketches and warned principals to stay on their guard.more...

'Suicide by Cop' suspected
Sept. 20 — Two deputies with the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office remain on administrative leave pending an investigation after one of the deputies shot and killed an unincorporated Martinez resident on Thursday night.
At a press briefing on Friday morning, a TV news reporter asked Captain Daniel Terry of the CCCSO Investigation Division whether the killing could be considered “suicide by cop.”more...

Suspect killed in shootout with police
Martinez Police received a call from the Pleasant Hill Police Department (PHPD) just after 11 a.m. on Sunday, requesting backup assistance after receiving reports of shots fired in a home adjacent to Sun Valley Mall. After a five-hour standoff, during which a 32-year-old male suspect repeatedly exchanged gun fire with police, a Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team member shot and killed the man.
