Alhambra looking forward to upcoming season
When you first look at the 2010 Alhambra High School football team, they may look like the same Bulldogs teams of years past, but not everything is as it seems. Last year’s team graduated 23 seniors off a team that went 11-2, won the Diablo-Foothill Athletic League and reached the NCS Division III semi-finals. Among those gone are Richard Calhoun, who averaged 177 rushing yards per game last year, Omar Omilabu, Zach Coniglio and Bill Krummen, each all All-League selections. more...

Martinez Bulldogs take trip to Cooperstown
The Martinez U12 Bulldogs returned from New York with a lifetime of memories. Martinez’s 12-and-under Pony baseball team had the opportunity to participate in the 2010 American Youth Baseball Hall of Fame Invitational Tournament held in Cooperstown, New York over the July 4 week, calumniating a nine-month planning process. The boys arrived in Cooperstown on July 2, eyes wide open, taking in everything the little town, that holds the Baseball Hall of Fame, had to offer.more...
Bulldogs defeat San Marin in NCS opening round
Since the high school baseball season started, there has been an ongoing debate on whether teams should use metal or wooden bats after Marin Catholic’s Gunner Sandberg was hit in the head in a scrimmage on March 11.
Although the North Coast Section Board of Managers voted on April 26 not to ban metal bats, the issue was again brought to light on Wednesday as the Alhambra Bulldogs hosted the San Marin Mustangs. The Mustangs, part of the Marin County Athletic League, opted to use the wooden bats, which they have used all season long. more...

Dublin blanks Dogs, 5-0; winner-take-all at Campo today
Alhambra and Campolindo, both 7-4, play for DFAL crown
Ah Dublin. In this case, that would be California, not Ireland. The furthest outpost in the DFAL. A different county (Alameda), yet the same area code (925). In case you wondered Dublin High School is in the middle of a $120 M renewal project funded by Bond Measure “C” and will have a capacity for 2,500 students when the project is complete in 2012-13. more...

Dogs rally for gritty win over Acalanes, 3-2; in first-place by half-game
Stephenson has tough spin, but holds-on for victory
The baseball gods struck again on Thursday. After pitching a no-hitter against Acalanes on April 20. On the first pitch of the “rematch” game, Trevor Lahonta lined a base hit to right field to put that question to rest.
Observers familiar with Robert Stephenson could see early-on that he did not have his usual “stuff.” In fact, he struggled in the first-inning, throwing about 25 pitches and allowing two runs. However, as the adage goes, good pitchers find a way to win, despite not having their best on a given day. It’s cliché, but true.more...

Alhambra finally gets chance to play Skyline and wins easily, 3-0
Three pitchers combine on 1-hitter; Stephenson had 3 RBIs
Well, I would not say that in this case absence made the heart grow fonder, but it was good to finally finish the non-league portion of the Alhambra baseball schedule. After being scheduled and cancelled twice, the third time, was, dare I say, a charm?
Coach Bip Roberts brought his Titans to Knowles Field to face the Bulldogs. With an odd number of teams in the DFAL, one school has a bye each Tuesday or Thursday. This was Alhambra’s second bye, as they are now heading down the stretch of the league docket with just a little over two weeks remaining.more...

College Park trips Alhambra in season opener, 37-14
Falcon’s offense gains 427 yards, with 311 coming on ground.
The past three meetings between rivals Alhambra and College Park have left the Bulldogs on the short-end. The 2007 game ended with a controversial 2-point conversion for the Falcons and left Alhambra bewildered. The past two contests, both played at CP, were not close; those two games saw the Falcons spank the Dogs 32-0 and 46-21, respectively.more...

Bulldogs look to rebound from sub-par gridiron campaign
Team blessed with significant experience; 17 lettermen return.
After an uncharacteristic 2-8 season in 2008, Alhambra football fans, coaches and players all shared a common disappointment. The team never really established an identity for themselves. Thus, the Bulldogs lacked a solid foundation which success could be built upon. The consistency they sought all season never arrived.

Bulldogs split weekend pair at home
Offense finally comes alive in rout of Skyline; disappointment vs. St. Mary’s.
Down Skyline 8-2
The game-time temperature at Knowles Field Friday afternoon was a comfortable 70-degrees. Not bad for still officially being winter for another week, or so. The temperature of the Alhambra bats also rose, finally, as they exhibited their best output so far of 2009.more...

Lady Bulldogs bring mix of experience and youth to diamond
Coach Carter’s team boasts Marisa Furtado, DFAL MVP in 2008.
Every season, the scouting report is pretty much the same for the Alhambra Lady Bulldogs softball team. Coach Dave Carter usually returns a strong core, say four to five players, and then has a stable of newcomers who he can sprinkle-in and form a solid unit. This year is no exception. The 2009 season sees Carter with strength and experience at catcher and pitcher and some in the outfield. more...

Bulldog pitching dominates in shutout of Encinal, 4-0
Waterman fans nine; Bezayiff clubs monster 370-foot HR.
A couple of weeks ago, we indicated that this year’s Alhambra baseball team would have dominant pitching. Well, after two games, that fact has become reality. In two games this season, the Bulldogs have allowed one earned run (0.50 ERA), five base hits and three walks in 14-innings of work. They have struck-out 19 batters in that span and allowed an opponent batting average of only .111 (5-for-45).more...

Strong finish for Alhambra soccer season
Varsity Bulldogs take 3rd-place in DFAL.
On February 13, the varsity Bulldogs braved driving rain while they played Miramonte. It was the final game of the season, a win would mean a tie with Las Lomas in DFAL standings. Bulldogs edge Las Lomas 2-1 in season opener on diamond
Ryan Casella pitches gem and is finally rewarded for effort.
It was a game of twos; everything came in dual form. In the end it took two runs to win the game and that “two” is what the scoreboard said on the Alhambra side of the ledger.
It was Opening Day for the 2009 Bulldogs’ season at Knowles Field on Thursday. Alhambra hosted Las Lomas, a fellow league member of the DFAL, in a non-league contest. Both starting pitchers were stellar, as the two teams tallied only seven hits. The Knight’s starter, Alex Toriggino, left with a 1-0 lead after six innings, but his mates couldn’t save the win for him.more...

Wrestlers, cheer squad win championships; spring sports baseball, softball and lacrosse underway.
Hardwood Season Ends with Senior Night
After a tough season on the hardwood, the Alhambra men’s and women’s basketball teams closed-out the 2008-09 campaign on Friday night. The home game versus Miramonte marked the final appearance for the Bulldog seniors on both clubs.
The Miramonte men spoiled things for the Bulldogs as they completed a perfect 12-0 DFAL regular season by taking a 69-45 win. Senior Travis Langner was high-point man for Alhambra with 17. Elliott Waterman, also a senior, chipped-in with nine.more...
